A CLEAN UP DAY AT ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL SANDAKAN

By DaliusLL

Sandakan : 'If we hold on together, I know our dreams will never die. Dreams see us through to forever, where clouds roll by for you and I'  the refrain of  of the Opening Song uplifted the spirit of some 150 laity of St. Mary's Cathedral who came in solidarity to support  the 'gotong-royong' organised by the Parish Pastoral Council on Sunday 14th October 2012 at 1.00 pm.
The event was organised in preparation for the 3-in-1 diocesan celebration of the Diocese of Sandakan, ~ the Official Opening and Solemn Blessing of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, the 5th Diocesan Anniversary and Episcopal Ordination of Rt Rev Datuk Julius Dusin Gitom on 26th and 27th October 2012 respectively.

The gotong royong started with Sr. Appollonia Gumpu FSIC leading the Opening Prayer and reflection on James 2:14 “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?” She reminded them as Christian, that being here alone for the gotong royong is one sure way we practice our faith and deeds, for as Apostle James said faith and actions ought to go hand in hand, and faith is made complete by  deed.
The PPC Chairman, Patrick Seah was happy to see such a good response from the parishioners, volunteering themselves for the clean-up event. Those who came were members of the BM, Chinese and English language communities, the Charismatic groups, Women Apostolate, various BECs, Sunday School teachers, the youths and the many ministries in the Church. He briefed the attendees of the 'gotong-royong' and assigned them to specific areas of the Cathedral compound according to their ministry and groupings.
Within a span of some three hours of cleaning and clearing, the Cathedral and its compound   was set aglow ~ spic and span. The parishioners were delighted to help out in cleaning the house of God and they had an enjoyable time in fellowship with one another.
