In conjunction
with Teachers’ Day, Sandakan Catholic Teachers’ Guild (CTG) had organized a
Thanksgiving Mass and a Thanksgiving Dinner. Both events were held on Saturday,
17 June 2017.
The thanksgiving
mass was a “2 in 1” mass, to celebrate Teachers’ Day and the retirement of Mdm.
Maureen Lai, the Advisor for Catholic Teachers Guild (CTG). This Eucharistic
celebration was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Christopher Ireneus.
Fr. Christopher
began his homily by saying that the Eucharistic celebration is not only to
celebrate Teachers’ Day but also to celebrate being a teacher as a vocation.
Teaching is a noble vocation and by treating this job as a vocation, teachers
are able to bring Christ in their career. He also encouraged teachers not to
give up easily despite facing all sorts of pressures and obstacles. He thanked
all teachers for their great efforts. He also acknowledged the efforts done by
his former teachers at SMK Sandakan. During
the celebration, Fr. Christopher blessed the new line up for Sandakan CTG.
In the evening, a
thanksgiving dinner was held at Equatorial Seafood restaurant. In his speech,
Rt. Rev. Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom has called upon all teachers to join CTG and
encouraged teachers to take the NPQEL course. It’s a course especially for those aspiring to
become a principal or headmaster/headmistress. It’s the hope of the Church that
more can fill up the administration posts especially in mission schools.
