Holy Thursday at St Mary's Cathedral

Sandakan: Holy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter. Catholics remember it as the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony known as the Eucharist.

The celebration is divided into four parts; the Liturgy of the Word, the washing of feet, the liturgy of the Eucharist, and the transfer of the Holy Eucharist. The act of washing the feet shows humility and a willingness to serve others.

Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom celebrated the occasion at St Mary’s Cathedral on 9th April 2009 at 7.30 pm and in his homily reminded parishioners that to be followers of Christ one should love others freely, with heartfelt compassion, kindness and goodness and it ought to be manifested through the act of service in humility. Love and service must go along and they are the two sides of the same coin. Below are photos showing part of the celebration.
