The meeting commenced with the Proclamation of the Word and an opening prayer led by the Bishop. In his welcoming address, he reflected on the reading taken from Acts 4:13-21. He urged all those who had committed to serve in the Commission as proposed by their priests and as official representatives of their parish, to follow the footsteps of the apostles. As people of the Resurrected Christ, we are duty bound to fulfill the great commission entrusted to us to spread the good news
to all corners of the world. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, nothing would hinder us to accomplish the divine mission of Christ. As the apostles had said, “It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” he asked that all be the instrument of God for channeling the good news to all.

Sr Veronica Kandaung thanked the Bishop for her appointment a
s the Chairperson of the Commission and pledged to do her best and together with team members hoped to enhance the Catechetical situation in the diocese. In her briefing, she touched on issues raised during the recent Malaysian Catechetical Commission held in Majodi, Johore on 2nd – 4th February where she attended as the official representative of the diocese. She brought up matters concerning the Malaysian Catechetical Series for Sunday School children, the RCIA program, the Sacrament of Confirmation and common problems encountered in running RCIA and Sunday School programs. Catechetical Sunday falls on 20th September 2009 with the theme “Giving the young a voice through The Word.”

An overall analysis of the Sunday School children and the RCIA catechumens of the various language speaking groups of all the parishes was highlighted. Members had the opportunity to scrutinize the strength and weaknesses of the programs and endeavor to seek for opportunities to improve the current situation in the diocese.

In winding up, Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom was pleased that the representatives looked at issues positively and hoped that the Commission will liaise with all Parish Catechetical Committees to ensure that Catechetical matters will be established on a strong and right footing. Catechetic vocation is never a job but a ministry, it is a call to serve.
