What an awakening message from Prof. Dr. Andrew on how students can be a voice of change. Personally, I have no idea that AUKU (Akta Universiti dan Kolej Universiti), exist with a great history behind. It began on how two best friends courageously took a path to be the voice of the young generation. They first fought for a fair education system to all students and then leapt to a bigger step, that is having a desire to have a fair government’s system in our country. It amazed me how these people who used to be ordinary, subsequently turned out to be extraordinary setting a good example for others.
It has shown us and had opened our eyes that certain authorities had used their power in a way to suppress the young generation from voicing out their thoughts. How ignorant! In spite of being a student at tertiary level, I have no guts at all to even ask for improvements to the facilities provided. It can be clearly seen that not all rules and regulation in any university and college are relevant and up to standard for our young and energetic generation. We need improvements to our attitude too and through this session, it really struck me that change has to start from myself first. Back in my college, the main focus is excellent academic performance. The rest is immaterial. However, to be able to perform well, one of the criteria is to have a conducive learning environment. How can a student perform well, when basic facilities, such as tables and chairs are insufficient.
It is a minor issue and can be easily sorted out. It is not all about tables and chairs but sending the message to the authorities to be more concern in assisting the students. It really hit me hard and encouraged me to do something about it. I believe, it struck the hearts of most participants too, as they slowly began to speak up and share their problems they encountered in their university or college. Obviously religious freedom has become a major issue in most institutes of higher learning. Dr Andrew’s response remains fresh in my head. "Yes we can do something about it, but the question is, are YOU willing and brave enough to accept the consequences of your action?" The only answer I can think of is, "if I wish to do nothing about it then who will take up the challenge?" What a great moment for me to rediscover my call in the college that God had planned for me.
