ST. MARY'S CATHEDRAL CORPUS CHRISTI EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Sandakan: St. Mary's Cathedral joined Pope Francis for an hour of Eucharistic Adoration in honour of Corpus Christi on 2 June 2013 at 11.00 pm – 12.00 midnight local time. Bishop Julius Gitom led the 400 strong faithful as part of the simultaneous global Eucharistic Adoration that unites Catholics in prayer across the world. The Worldwide Eucharistic Adoration, themed 'One Lord, One Faith' began at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican at 5.00 pm Rome’s time.

Along with the laity who came as early as 10.00 pm to show their strong response for this historic hour were the Rector himself Fr. Thomas Makajil, Religious Sisters and the PPC Chairman Patrick Seah.  Bishop Julius led the Adoration by placing the consecrated Host in the Monstrance, followed by an adoration service of the Blessed Sacrament at the tabernacle. 

The Adoration event signifies the solemnity of Corpus Christi which is celebrated this day, which is a sign of devotion and worship of Jesus Christ who is present body, blood, soul and divinity in the form of the consecrated Host, the Eucharist.

Sandakan Diocese can be proud for being part of this historical moment in the history of the Catholic Church because for one hour all the Churches in the world are united together through the simultaneous Adoration. This event affirmed what is said by the Vatican Pontifical Council for New Evangelization, Archbishop Rino Fisichella who told Catholic News Agency on May 28 interview, “We are united because the Eucharist makes us all one Body and one Spirit, so we enter into the deepest meaning of the Eucharist.”

The Worldwide Eucharistic Adoration, a major event in conjunction with the Year of Faith,  is an opportunity to place oneself before the presence of Jesus Christ Himself during the solemn adoration. Hopefully more of the faithful will respond and be generous with their time meeting Jesus in deep silence and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
