Sandakan : After about two months into the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process in the “inquiry
period” the candidates were officially accepted into the Catholic Church as
‘catechumens’ with the presence of their respective sponsors, witnessed by some 2,000 parishioners during the Bahasa Malaysia Sunday mass on 23rd August, 2015.
This year around, St Mary's Cathedral welcomed 78 catechumens to the parish community with 57 from the Bahasa Malaysia community, 16 from the Chinese community and 5
others from the English speaking community.
The Rite of Acceptance was administered by Rev. Fr.
Sunny Chung, the assistant rector of the Cathedral. The presider signed the cross on the forehead of each candidate while the sponsors performed the signing of the senses. All candidates were presented with a Holy Bible each.
Catechumens will attend Sunday mass from next week
onward, participating in the Liturgy of the Word and will then leave the
church for their formation sessions.
