Sandakan : The family has always been among the Church's urgent concerns because it is the Domestic Church and the basic unit, a living cell of society. During the World Meeting of Families in Milan May 30 - June 3rd, Pope Benedict XVI said, 'Faith in Christ must inspire the entire fabric of personal, community, private and public life so as to allow a real and stable sense of well being, starting from the family.'
The inaugural meeting of the Diocesan Family Life Commission was held on Saturday, 11th August at the Diocesan Retreat Centre, Ulu Dusun. Two members from each Parish, actively involved in Parish Family Life Ministry, attended the meeting.
Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom presided the meeting and welcomed all members representing the four parishes. The prelate said that a-midst the many challenges and struggles in the globalized world, pastoral care for the family should be accorded a prominent priority in the Church. A strong family is the only assurance to having a strong Church.
He cited the role of parents as stated in the document 'Familiaris Consortio' that they are the 'family evangelizers'. The home is where basic Christian ministry happens, where the Word of God is first and continually proclaimed and where one experience God's great love. It is the duty of parents to bring the child to Jesus as in Matthew 17:14-17 where a deeply concerned father brought his severe epileptic son to Jesus for healing. It remains the responsibility of parents for the integral formation of their children, a responsibility they cannot relinquish.
The following is the line-up of the Commission for a tenure of two years, 2012 ~ 2014.
Julita, the newly appointed Chairperson was grateful to Bishop Julius for the confidence and trust placed upon her. She pledged to do her utmost to promote and to coordinate Marriage and Family Life programs for the Diocese of Sandakan and thus contribute to the renewal of the Church.
Members shared on Parish based family life activities focused mainly on pre-marriage course, its strengths and weaknesses. They explored on other scopes that the Commission could help to promote; youth, marriage enrichment, parenting, counselling, sacredness and dignity of human life.
The first program adopted would be a training program for facilitators involved in pre-marriage course scheduled in January 2013.
