STAR OF YAHWEH COVENANT COMMUNITY (SYCC) CELEBRATES THEIR 30TH ANNIVERSARY

By Susanna Cordova
Sandakan : The Star Of  Yahweh Covenant Community (SYCC) celebrated their 30th anniversary on 31st August in a local popular restaurant. Invited guests to the celebration included the ex-presiding elder, Henry Solibun and wife as well as the Parish Pastoral Council Chairman, Pilis Malim. The guest of honour, Rev. Father Sunny Chung led the Opening Prayer and graced the cake cutting ceremony together with the elders of SYCC, Michael Lee, Michael Lai and Philip Mosinoh.
Gregory Quadra, the MC for the event, recalled on the formation of SYCC, formalized on 19th August 1984 and launched by the late Ray Steward and wife of the Emmanuel Covenant Community based in Brisbane, Australia. On that memorable occasion, a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky, showing the greatness of God showering His blessing upon the community. He touched on Genesis : 9, where Noah made an everlasting covenant with God, in connection with the inauguration of SYCC.

The presiding elder, Michael Lee in his welcoming speech, said that SYCC has gone through many trials and tribulations throughout its long and amazing journey. For 30 years, members of the community held on together in faith, conducting without fail the weekly praise and worship session. Indeed, the journey is challenging yet enriching and fulfilling. Members experienced joy and yet at times disappointment as they journey with the Lord.
The commitment of members, giving priority to the community in all aspects of life is important to maintain and sustain community life. Apart from cementing good relationship bond, members are to accept one another regardless of background and cultures and to commit to serve God as one body and one spirit. Members encourage and build each other up, to remain faithful to the Lord, in words and in deeds.
Some of the activities carried out during the year; being involved in charity work, providing pastoral care to the people in the Paitan Missionary area and conducting Life in the Spirit Seminar.

The celebration was filled with various activities; the SYCC youth serenaded a few praise and worship songs, the SYCC ladies presenting lively action songs, lucky draw, games and quiz.

There were two sharings - one from Sr. Carmen Cordova fsic, who was one of the SYCC single ladies’ group member before  joining the religious and Nelson Mosinoh who was a member of the SYCC Children group in the community.

The celebration was indeed a memorable one with much joy and fun. It was indeed a blessing from the Lord Jesus to the community.
