SANDAKAN - The catechetical Sunday for 2017, being brought
forward from September to January by the Catechetical Commission of Malaysia,
where the Sunday school usually begins the classes in January each year, has
eased on problems with Sunday school teachers in the parish.
The theme “Christ our joy” is a session with parents
of children from the Sunday school was held on 14th January 2017
where an opportunity was given for teachers and parents with their children to
have a dialogue to give a better understanding of each other’s role.
Beginning with the session, Sr. Martina gave a catechesis
on the role and responsibility of parents as the first catechist in passing on the
faith to their children. On the other hand, the teachers are to assist them on
Sundays where the children attend Sunday school classes.
At the dialogue session, parents were allowed to ask
questions to know more about the Sunday school. Some parents asked on matters
of age, dress code during Confirmation, syllabus on Catechetical Malaysia series
and others. The teachers replied that the age for Sunday school is between 7 to
16 years old until they received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
It was a fruitful dialogue where the parents and
teachers had a good understanding on the Sunday school.
Another session for the faith formation for catechist
was on “The Catechist’s vocation, role, mission, spirituality and competence”. It
was geared towards the formation of catechists from the 3 language groups to
develop their confidence and commitment.
The following week also, on one Saturday, a program
for the Sunday school children was held. A Coloring competition was introduced
to children from the kindergarten to level 3. A bible reading presentation for
level 4 to 6 and a drama based on a bible verse was for students from age 13 to
16 years old. Thereafter, winners in the various competitions were presented
with prizes.
At the sunset mass, all catechists from the Bahasa
Malaysia, Chinese and the English group were present for the commissioning and
blessings after the mass by Rev. Fr. Christopher Ireneus.
