Sandakan:
What a blessing for the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) of Indah Jaya when they
received provision of tools and equipment from the Batu Sapi Member of
Parliament on 23rd August 2019. The simple handover ceremony was
presented by Datuk Liew View Kiong, MP of Batu Sapi cum Malaysia Minister of
Law to BEC Indah Jaya chairperson John Tan. The tools and equipment consists of
grass cutters, a chainsaw, wheelbarrows, hoes, spades, ladders and pruning
tools, worth about RM5,000.
For
the past 10 years, members of the BEC Indah Jaya have been actively doing their
monthly charity work by cleaning-up (gotong-royong) the Sibuga Catholic
cemetery. Their community work and good track record in beautifying the cemetery
has earned them to be recommended as a non-profit grass-cutting contractor to receive
the grant. The BEC is also involved in regular cleaning up of another old Christian
cemetery in Kam Jai Yen.
Around
30 active BEC members commit themselves in keeping the cemeteries clean and
tidy which befits the holy ground of the church. Members collect rubbish left over
by the visitors, grass cutting, pruning overgrown trees, maintaining landscape
work and some repair work. Maintaining the two cemeteries had prompted them to
seek funding from among their own members and those concerned Christians. It is such a blessing that the Member of
Parliament for Batu Sapi responded to the request of BEC Indah Jaya for a donation
in kinds.
John
Tan and his committee expressed their gratitude to Datuk VK Liew and his Parliamentary
staff for their support towards this good cause. The committee believes that
the provision of tools and equipment will motivate more members in offering
their service to the church. In response, the law maker is happy to note that
this assistance will not only help the BEC but also as a channel in reaching-out
to others. Before he went for another appointment, Datuk VK Liew asked the committee
to pray for him and in particular for the well-being of the country.
