Sandakan- Easter Vigil was celebrated by His Lordship Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom and concelebrated by Fr. David Garaman, on 24th March 2018, at St. Mary Cathedral’s compound, attended by some 1500 parishioners. The Mass began with the blessing of the fire and the lighting of the Easter candle, symbolizing that Christ came into our lives as the light of salvation, illumined our darkness and led us to the path of eternal life.
In his homily, the prelate called upon all brothers and sisters who are going to be baptized in the resurrection of Jesus to be filled with joy in their hearts, to step out from darkness into the light of Christ with bonds of love thru baptism. The prelate also addressed the faithful on the importance of renewing their Sacrament of Baptism. It is a reminder that Christ has risen and lived among us, to celebrate the resurrection of our Saviour, who saves mankind through his unconditional love and sacrifice.
This year around, St. Mary’s Cathedral welcomed 60 new members: 48 from the BM class, 8 from the English class and 4 from the Chinese class.

"In life, we have a big rock that weighs us down. What is that big rock? It's our sins. The resurrection of Jesus has removed the rocks that weighs us down. Believe that even now, He is still able to roll away the stone that weighs us down in our lives." -Fr. Christopher Ireneus-

St. Mary Cathedral Neophytes Testimonial

Adriana Cham
I am Adriana, 17 years old. Before I join RCIA, I know nothing about God, although my family took me to the church since I was young. Most of the time I am just daydreaming and didn't care to know who Christ is. After I joined the RCIA last year and  I dare say is that I'm glad that I had made the decision and no regret.
I finally get to understand that only Christ can fill the emptiness in my heart. He died for our sins and still forgive us because he loves us more than we love him.
After knowing Christ's goodness, I make effort to change my bad habits gradually. I learned to be more patient and help those people who're in need of help.
By prayer,  my pain is eased and relieved. I thank God that he is always  with me even when I'd done wrong. He takes all of my problems and allow me to depend on him to lead and guide me daily.

Adeline Cham
I am Adeline Cham, a secondary school student. Before joining the RCIA, I do have  few experiences with the Catholic Church as I attended mass frequently with my mother, brother, sister and relatives who are Catholics but had no idea what was going on during mass. I couldn't understand anything because I wasn't really listening. I felt lost and out of place not knowing what to say when everyone in the Church was responding or saying prayers. I was curious and started asking my family questions about the Church to have a better understanding.
As such I decided to enroll for the RCIA with my sister. In the  process of our sessions, I began to realize several issues; the Catholic Church is the one true church that I was searching. I'm determine and want to be a Catholic.
I feel that I know God better. I was never alone. HE is always with me, carrying me through the dark and bright. I'm more confident.
Looking back, I found that I was wrong to believe and thinking that God had ever abandoned me and my family in those very moment of our deepest despair and lost. I know now that God loves me and allow certain things to happen in our lives because HE knows that is best for us.
He wants me to be with Him and share in His love; and I hope to be able to do just that. I am so grateful that I have this knowledge and understanding through my involvement in the RCIA session. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Alicia Noriko Suzuki
I’m Alicia Noriko Suzuki from Japan. I married a local man in 2001. I have two daughters (15yrs and 12yrs old). All my husband's family members are Roman Catholics except me. I followed them to church ever since l was married and had always observed what was performed in mass. When they went for the Holy Eucharist, I felt lonely. At that time, I didn’t have confidence to participate in RCIA because of  language barrier. I can’t speak and understand English very well.  I had thought of conversion into a Catholic in Japan but I cannot be back to Japan for such a long period for RCIA because of family commitment here in Sandakan so I pluck my courage and decide to participate in RCIA here in St Mary's Cathedral. I was a hot tempered, negative person before I joined RCIA. I began to feel better and more positive as the sessions advanced. I am able to control my feelings. The fear and uncomfortable language barrier was not in existence anymore. In this, I think and believe the Holy Spirit helped me to understand the word of God and overcome all my fear. If I’m still in Japan, I think I will  not be baptized and I will not know how to open my bible to read. I was so excited and anxious during my baptism by Father David on the Easter Vigil. I thought I was going to die as I felt I cannot breathe. But after the immersion, out of the pool, I heard  many people clapping  for me and at the same time I saw my daughters cried. Thanks God, I'm not dead, alive both physically and spiritually. When I’m received my first Holy Eucharist, I was very excited and do not know what to expect. My husband said he cried with the “tears of joy” for me. Now I believe in the existence of God.  I thank God for  I can be  with husband and family sharing the same faith. I am thankful for the right timing to participate in RCIA as all our friends there are very friendly, kind, helpful. Though I’m chosen as a leader of English RCIA in this batch, they share all my work load, understanding that I'm a foreigner. Last but not least, thank you to Bishop Julius, Fr David, all the facilitators, my family members and friends for supporting, guiding and leading us in this journey of faith. Please continue to support, guide and lead us to the happiness of heaven with God’s love. Amen.

KESAKSIAN DARIPADA BAPTISAN BARU (BM) KATEDRAL ST. MARY’S SANDAKAN

Jordan Jamlin Sarawi

Francis Wong
Saya Francis Wong Teck Sing, berusia 30 tahun.

Amen.

Magdalena Anak Malaka

Nama saya Magdalena Anak Malaka.

Amen..

Vanessa Lai

Nama saya Vanessa Lai.  Saya berusia 26 tahun.

Amen.

HOLY THURSDAY REMINDS US TO BE A HUMBLE SERVANT

By: Julita Kantod

Tawau : More than 1,000 parishioners attended the 7.30 pm Holy Thursday Eucharistic Celebration at Holy Trinity Church on 29th March 2018. The mass was presided over by Rev. Fr. Sunny Chung and con celebrated by Msgr. Nicholas Ong.
In his opening note to the congregation, Fr. Sunny invited all to reflect on the purpose of serving others either in the church, in the community or in the family. Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. It is a sign and example on being humble with unconditional love for the sake of serving others.
Fr. Sunny, in his homily, reminded all that Holy Thursday teaches us a few important things that should be reflected and be embedded in our hearts. It also provides direction for all of us and the future generation.
Jesus Christ washes the feet of his disciples including the disciple who betrayed him. This act reminds all of us to serve others humbly, honestly, and with a pure heart without any condition attached. Service is never for self-gratification but for the glory of God. It is always for others.
It is the moment when Christ gives his last order to his disciples and perhaps to us to participate in the Eucharistic celebration, to receive His body and blood for the forgiveness of sin and inherit eternal life in heaven. Each time we celebrate the Eucharist, we will remember the great passion of our redeemer/saviour who brought us life through His unfailing love.
He summed up his homily touching on the mysteries which are commemorated in the mass; the institution of the Eucharist which is the summit of our Catholic faith, the priesthood and His command of brotherly love.
Fr Sunny performed the foot washing ceremony on 12 parishioners chosen from the various parish communities.
After the celebration, the Blessed Sacrament was carried in procession to the Church Basement Room for reposition. Members of the various groups continued keeping vigil with d Lord until mid-night.

GOOD FRIDAY: WHO ELSE CRUCIFIED JESUS?

Article by DaliusLL

Sandakan: On Good Friday, 30th March 2018, St. Mary’s Cathedral began their event at 9.00am with the devotion of the Way of the Cross in a combined three languages: English, Bahasa and Chinese.  The morning devotion drew some 600 faithful from this parish. The outdoor spiritual walk started from the Cathedral’s entrance all the way to the Diocesan Pastoral Centre. There were 14 images depicting Jesus Christ’s on the day of his crucifixion affixed along the route with accompanying selected prayers as the people move from station to station. The purpose of the stations is to help the faithful to make a personal contemplation of the Passion of Christ and how it relates in our spiritual journey. In following the footsteps of Jesus in the Way of the Cross, one experiences a perpetual day of penance, to obtain graces and grow in holiness.
The Good Friday Service in Bahasa began at 1.30pm, while the English Service began at a later time at 5.00pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral, and as for the Chinese Service, at 3.00pm in St. Joseph Church. Thousands of parishioners came to attend the three services.
As for the English service, His Rev. Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom celebrated the service with a solemn entrance. In his homily, His Lordship posed a question to the faithful on “Who else crucified Jesus in the story of Christ’s passion and death?” He said that as mankind, we are responsible for Jesus’ crucifixion due to our human sinfulness; we crucify our Lord again and again. Let us ask, or examine ourselves sincerely. Perhaps, we are like Pilate who does not want to take responsibility and wanted to wash our hands, or perhaps maybe like the Jews in Jerusalem demanding Jesus’ crucifixion or we are the same people singing Hosanna in welcoming Jesus a week ago or perhaps just like the onlookers allowing things to happen. Whatever the character we relate to in that story, we are crucifying Jesus again and again.
He stressed by saying that the cross where Jesus died is not only reminding us of our own sinful condition, but also a constant reminder of God’s love despite of Him being crucified every day in our hearts. As we come to venerate the cross today, even if we do not understand much, we feel the beauty and greatness of His love. May we experience the strength of His divine grace; no matter how sinful we are, for it can never change the unfading love of Jesus for us. The concluding service ended by the faithful venerating the crucifix.

"The passion and death of our Lord Jesus are about Him paying for our sins. When Jesus said "it is finished" on the cross, we became like Him because He paid all our sins in His crucifixion. Therefore, you are now free! Go!" Fr. Christopher.

EASTER TRIDUUM: A half way there in achieving the Vision and Mission of the Diocese

Reported by DaliusLL

Parishioners of St. Mary Cathedral observe Holy Thursday on 29th March 2018, one of the most important and profound days of celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday Mass marked the end of Lent and the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, the three day celebration of the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. The Holy Thursday Mass commemorates the three mysteries:  the Institution of the holy Eucharist, the institution of the priesthood, and Christ’s command of brotherly love.
The 7.30pm Holy Mass was attended by some 1500 faithful and presided over by the Bishop of Sandakan Diocese, His Rev. Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom and concelebrated with St. Mary’s Cathedral Rector, Rev. Fr. David Garaman.
In his homily, the prelate stressed that through the institution of the Eucharist and Priesthood, man are joined in the act of God saving plan. There is a close link between Jesus’ washing the feet of His disciples and for the disciples to do the same for others later. The prelate said, if the Eucharist is the place where the Lord washes our feet, in real life, then we should also be able to wash the feet of others. It will be a great challenge to wash the feet of others, even though they are close to us, what more with those who are always annoying us, who keep nagging us or who are unjust to us. It is not easy, but bear in mind that Jesus was not selective when He washes the feet of His disciples even though He was fully aware that some will betray and desert Him. Bishop Julius further said that if we can do that, then we are already half way in achieving the Vision and Mission of the diocese to become a “Christ-Centered Community, Serving one another with Love”. He encouraged all the faithful to always come to the Lord in the Eucharist, asking the Lord for grace and strength so that the Eucharist may manifest in humble service.
After the homily, the prelate proceeded to conduct the solemn rite of the washing of the feet of 12 assigned parishioners which is an integral ceremony during Holy Thursday Mass. The washing of the feet represents the service and charity of Christ, who came not to be served, but to serve. Thus, the scriptural root of the sacrament of holy orders derived.

At the conclusion of the Mass, the rite of transfer of the Blessed Sacrament was carried out in a procession accompanied by lighted candles and incense through the church to the place of reservation, the pyx. The faithful were invited to have an hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until midnight, just as the disciples kept a vigil with Christ on the night He was about to be betrayed.
