Sandakan : This year the closing of St Mary's Cathedral Sunday School Session of the English section was held on the 7th November 2011. Being a public holiday, parents took the opportunity to particpate in the event. Children started arriving as early as 8.00 am in preparation for the day's event. Including the students, close to about 500 attended the event.

Sr. Liliana fsic the Co-ordinator of the Sunday School in her opening speech expressed her deep appreciation to the animators for their enthusiastic service and support. In additon she also took the opportunity to thank the parents of the students for their dedication in ensuring that their kids are brought up in the faith. However, she reminded that though the Sunday School session is closed, faith building does not end. The closing actually means a pause only.

The year one and two students kicked off the presentation with their rendition of popular songs. This was followed by 4 students of the senior level who gave testimonies of their understanding of the sacraments of the Church. All gave a good insight into the introduction of the seven Sacraments.

Rosemary Neubronner Ngui the English section coordinator in her speech stressed on the need of closer and more active particpation of parents. She expressed her appreciation to the parents for their kind and understanding support. In addition she was also grateful to the team of her fellow animators for their voluntary service. She also took the opportuniy of thanking Sr. Liliana fsic for her service and guidance. Sr. Liliana fsic will be on transfer to the Diocese of Keningau next year.
Sandakan : St Mary's Hostel, sited within the Catholic Education Complex of two secondary schools and 3 primary schools some 4 kilometers from the town center had begun its first term for the academic year 2011. Established and became operational in 2006 with just 10 boarders, it has now 17 registered boarders studying at the St Mary's Secondary School.
Over a period of 5 years in operation, some 20 boys, having benefited from staying in the hostel had left either after completing Form 5 or Upper Six. This year around three new boarders from Kg. Lubang Buaya of the Paitan Missionary Area and one from Pamol had joined the hostel. Most of the boarders are from the rural areas within the St Mary's Cathedral Parish.
On Friday 21st January 2011, The feast of St Agnes, the newly ordained diocesan priest, Rev. David Aloysius Garaman presided the Eucharistic celebration at the hostel. Rev David will be transferred to Holy Trinity Parish, Tawau as the assistant parish priest effective February 2011. Sr. Lillian and other members of the Hostel Management Committee were also present at the celebration.
Apart from the monthly Eucharistic celebration, formation talks are also conducted from time to time to enable the boys to be properly grounded in their faith.
Sandakan : The Diocese of Sandakan through its Building Committee headed by John Pang had embarked on a massive project (building proper, external work and fixtures) of some RM3.5 million ~ the Diocesan Pastoral cum Worship Centre, a secretariat tending to the pastoral needs of the people. Construction work had begun and the project is expected to complete by October 2011.
The fund raising sub-committee of the project led by Anthony J Wong had worked out a three-pronged approach in soliciting the said fund ; Church and Diocese reserves, sponsorship of rooms / space and from the kind contribution of the parishioners across the four parishes.

Henry Wong, Chairman of the Diocesan Finance Council entrusted to raise the RM1 million form the vast majority of the parishioners chaired a meeting Friday, December 10, 2010. Some 20 leaders of the St Mary's Cathedral Parish representing the Pastoral Council, Finance and Property Committee, Group and community leaders attended the meeting at the Diocesan Conference Room.
He called upon the attendees to contribute generously, using their gifts and the many blessings received, to be co-workers in realizing the hallmark of the Diocese.
He said, 'The Diocese is very much dependent upon her faithful, working together in God's service, to build the Centre.'
Francis Tan of the Diocese Office, through a power point presentation touched on the background and history of the Diocese, general statistics, development and progress, implementation of pastoral activities, establishment of commissions, diocesan pastoral thrust through community building and the details of the Diocesan Pastoral cum Worship Centre.

Sandakan: ‘Saksikan pada dunia, penebusan yang mulia, kuasa SalibMu sempurna…’ Begitulah serba sedikit lirik lagu tema yang dipilih untuk Kem Muzik dan Konsert itu, bertajuk ‘Dahsyat, Engkau Hebat!’. Apabila terdengar atau terbaca buat pertama kali tema tersebut, mungkin membuat kita tertanya-tanya apa atau siapakah yang begitu dahsyat sehingga begitu hebat. Tema ini sebenarnya diinspirasi dari ayat suci alkitab, Mzm 8: 2 ‘Ya Tuhan, Tuhan kami, betapa mulianya namaMu di seluruh bumi! KeagunganMu yang mengatasi langit dinyanyikan.’ Siapakah yang lebih hebat kalau bukan Tuhan Yesus. Dia menyerahkan dirinya untuk wafat di kayu salib bagi menebus dosa-dosa kita. Justeru itu, bermula dari membuat persediaan sehingga tamatnya program ini, tumpuan utama adalah khusus buat YESUS KRISTUS.
Triduum Persiapan Rohani (8hb ~ 9hb Jun 2009)
Dengan bimbingan Sr Appolonia Gumpu dan Sr Liliana Gubud, fsic, sebagai memperhebat persiapan pihak penganjur, satu Triduum Persiapan Rohani telah dibuat sebelum bermulanya Kem Muzik dan Konsert tersebut. Hari pertama iaitu pada 8hb Jun 2009 telah dihadiri oleh Tim Penganjur dan Tim Belia Paroki Katedral St. Mary, Sandakan. Sebagai pembukaan triduum, mereka diajak merenung ayat-ayat dalam Maz 8. Hari kedua pula mereka merenung peristiwa-peristiwa sedih dalam hidup Yesus dengan berdoa Rosari dan diselitkan lagu-lagu pujian. Pada hari terakhir mereka merayakan Para Liturgi Khas di mana mereka mengulangi perbuatan Yesus terhadap pengikut-pengikutnya iaitu penyucian kaki secara bergilir-gilir sesama mereka. Ini bertujuan untuk memberi kesempatan kepada mereka bagi merenung peribadi masing-masing agar dapat saling bermaafan atas kesilapan dan kelemahan serta merendahkan diri untuk melayani sesama khususnya sewaktu dalam proses persiapan program tersebut.
Kem itu telah dijalankan selama 3 hari 2 malam (bermalam) iaitu pada 12hb hingga 14hb Jun 2009 bertempat di Dewan Paroki Katedral St Mary, Sandakan. Seramai 96 orang belia telah menyertai program ini di mana 70 orang adalah dari Katedral St Mary, 10 dari Gereja St Paul, Ulu Dusun, 11 dari Gereja Our Lady of Fatima, Beluran dan 5 orang lagi dari Gereja St Dominic, Lahad Datu.
Aksi-aksi beberapa kumpulan peserta dalam aktiviti mencipta rentak lagu menggunakan peralatan dapur.
Sepanjang kem ini, pelbagai input telah mereka terima melalui ceramah-ceramah yang dikendalikan dalam gabungan Bahasa Melayu dan Inggeris. Penceramah-penceramah jemputan adalah terdiri daripada Fr Thomas Makajil, Rektor Katedral St Mary dengan tajuk ceramahnya, Faith & Music dan Sr Liliana Gubud, fsic memperkatakan tentang Music & Liturgy. Selain itu, dua orang yang cukup berpengalaman dalam muzik turut menjadi penceramah pada kem tersebut iaitu saudara Romeo Cordova yang memperjelas tentang Praise & Worship dan saudara Michael Lai dengan ceramahnya bertajuk Music in Old and Modern World. Semua ceramah tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahawa kita dapat membina iman melalui muzik dan pelayanan dalam muzik berbeza dari segi caranya dimainkan mengikut tujuan, situasi dan tempat serta muzik juga akan berubah selari dengan peredaran zaman. Selain ceramah, pelbagai aktiviti juga dijalankan antaranya ialah mencari harta karun dan mencipta tarian dari lagu-lagu rohani. Aktiviti tersebut melatih para peserta untuk berkerjasama dalam kumpulan. Sesi menyanyi dan penghayatan lagu bersama juga ada iaitu Music Heals dan Expression of Music dengan iringan kugiran.

Pada malam 13hb Jun, selepas Misa Kudus petang, Konsert Y2J 2009 telah dilangsungkan di tempat yang sama. Fr Thomas Makajil, Sr Liliana, fsic dan sebilangan umat awam turut hadir memberi sokongan kepada acara tersebut dan sama-sama bergembira menyanyi bagi Tuhan. Sebelum konsert bermula, para peserta mengikut kumpulan mempersembahkan hasil kekreatifan mereka mencipta rentak lagu menggunakan peralatan dapur. Kemudian, selepas Fr Thomas memimpin doa pembukaan, konsert telah dimulakan dengan lagu-lagu pujian antaranya adalah lagu Tema iaitu Dashyat, Engkau Hebat (True Worshippers Youth), I’m Not Ashamed (Hillsong United) dan Shout Your Name (Hillsong Australia). Para peserta mengambil kesempatan ini untuk memuji sepenuh jiwa dan raga bagi Yesus di mana mereka tanpa segan silu melompat, menyanyi dan bersorak bersama demi merasai keghairahan terhadap kedashyatan cinta kasih Tuhan. Ahli-ahli kugiran pada malam tersebut merupakan belia dari Tim Pelayanan Muzik Belia Katedral St Mary iaitu pihak penganjur yang mempunyai pengalaman lebih kurang 10 tahun dalam muzik. Mereka adalah Christopher Aban sebagai pemain Gitar Akustik dan Worship Leader, Maria Lourdes Dy, Roland Escobido, Roselyn AB, Pearl B Lim dan Arlene Abel sebagai para penyanyi latar, Donny Lee, pemain Dram, Eloise Abragan pemain Gitar Bass, Kenny Lai memainkan Gitar Utama, Dulce Fiel, pemain Keyboard, Rodney Roger Sining sebagai pemain Gitar Akustik ke-2 serta Roney Roger Sining, pemain percussion. Selepas lagu pujian, para peserta dan hadirin diajak berdiam untuk menghayati lagu-lagu penyembahan pula iaitu antaranya, Jadi sepertiMu (True Worshippers Youth) dan To the Ends of the Earth (Hillsong). Saat tersebut, karunia bahasa Roh Kudus turun ke peribadi yang menyembah Tuhan dengan segenap hati memberikan kelapangan jiwa yang tidak dapat diluahkan melalui kata-kata hanya dapat menitiskan air mata yang menandakan diri sendiri sungguh kerdil di hadapanNya, hamba yang lemah serta merendahkan diri, melupakan segala hal duniawi demi meletakkan Kristus di tempat teratas. Amen!
Nyanyian yang tulus dan dengan segenap hati memanggil kehadiran Roh Kudus sewaktu konsert.
Pada hari berikutnya, sebagai sesi penamat Kem Muzik dan Konsert Y2J 2009, satu sesi prayover khas telah dikendalikan oleh para pembimbing dari Star of Yahweh Covenant Community (SYCC). Pada sesi tersebut, para peserta didoakan dengan bantuan Roh Kudus bagi menyentuh hati dan membakar semangat mereka agar menjadi berani dan kuat untuk menjadi Saksi Kristus, menjalankan misi mereka sebagai belia dengan menyebarkan pegalaman berharga sepanjang kem, menginjil serta melakukan pelayanan mereka melalui muzik.
Sambil para peserta menjalankan misi tersebut, Tim Pelayanan Muzik Belia Katedral St Mary, Sandakan juga ada misi tersendiri. Mereka mempunyai program susulan bagi tahun ini iaitu Y2J Music Acoustic Praise & Worship – Mini Concert yang dijangka akan berlangsung pada bulan September dan Y2J Musical Christmas In Jazz pada bulan Disember. Doa kita panjatkan kepada Bapa di Syurga agar pelayanan mereka menghasilkan banyak buah yang baik.
